Guitar builder looking to build a boat

Post by LCGuitars »

Hello all,

I am new here and looking to build a small outboard powered runabout. I am leaning toward the Zip with a 20HP outboard. The local lakes have a 20HP limit, so want to stay in that range. I am a professional luthier(guitar builder) so I think I can transfer those skills into boat building. I am sure I will have lots of questions once I get started though.

Another Rob newbie.

Best of luck on the zip, plus there is a guy on YouTube named Joshua Burks that built a zip and very detailed videos - I think he did 52 videos on the build. For a first timer it was great to watch as he describes what to do and not do. Good info for any build. He is very detailed oriented.

The Zip is a fun project. Keep it simple and light and 20hp will be fine.

Thank you! I probably won't keep it simple as a woodworker I have big plans for inlays and such. But I will keep it light. If I feel the need for speed I have a SeaDoo Jet Boat to play on. I just have to take it further to get on a lake with unlimited HP.

That is my inspiration for building the Zip. Looks like the perfect size.

If you can build a guitar a boat will be easy. Have fun!

As soon as I finish up this 5 String Bass build I will be starting building the frames for the Zip. I got my plans in last week and I am ready to go!

With a 20 keep it light and it will be a fun boat, with 4 people it probably wont get on plane though. Flying Saucer is just a smaller Zip, would be a great option for a 20 as well.
