Hamburg Squirt Build

I started building the squirt in the last days of summer last year. In reason of building the Squirt outside I stopped the build the last months because the winter was way too cold.

Last summer I build frame 1, 2 and the transom. I started to draw it in cad and cut the parts with my mini cnc (600x400mm).

Today was warm enough so I started the building form and now it‘s time to document the progress.

I have a lot of questions and hope to get some help
First questions is how to screw the transom knee to the transom? I know there are two maschine (?) screws...

I will build in Sapele. Last summer I had only the garden to build...
This year I‘ve a carport where I can build the Squirt. It‘s not much better - maybe next year I will have a garage?!

To answer your question on the transom knee, there should be 4 carriage bolts (3/8" diameter) used to secure it. Two into the transom, and 2 into the keel. These can be double hot dipped galvanized or bronze. Do NOT use stainless steel here since these bolts should be fully encapsulated in epoxy. I found it easier to mount the knee to the transom before mounting the transom on your building form.

It‘s cold here in Germany so I decided to modify my transom. Also I got a new saw - and directly cut into the screws

I hope to get the transom and frames to the building form next week!

Today I‘ve sanded the frames, keel and transom and got epoxy on these parts.

Is there a reason why not install the battens before sheers and chines?

I‘m making good progress this week. Tommorrow I will install the battens.

Looking great! I'm just a beginner myself, but I put the battens on before installing the chines and shears. The chines were "fun" to do, I ended up doing them in two strips each rather than just one. It was much easier to get the bend I was happy with.

I installed the battens, sheers and chines are next.
Unluckily the sheers I‘ve got are the wrong size(?).
Maybe I‘ve done a mistake by converting the measurements into the metric System...
At the breasthook the sheers are too small but at the frames and transom they fit. Maybe it’s just my breasthook which is wrong...
Sheers are 3 centimeters thick.

I think you are correct, the sheer does look too thin. The Sheer will be almost a triangular between frame 2 and the breasthook, so you may need to add another layer to it.

I recommend installing the sheer before the chine. The chine needs to be twisted between frame 2 and the breasthook and you can brace it against the sheer to help hold the twist.

Also install the keel and battens first. The keel is bolted to the stem and it arches up at frame 2 and down to frame 1. The keel needs to be flat from frame 1 to the transom, and because of the arch you may need to adjust the angle of the transom to flatten the keel. Once the transom is set, the sheers can be installed and finally the chines.
