Good to hear you are making progress getting everything ready. Are you using a graphite packing? That would explain black residue.

I went old school--waxed flax. I did use graphite on the rudder post, but went with flax on the stuffing box.
Still seems to be doing a good job of keeping water out...too good. Just a gentle hand tight stops the drips.

Re: Key Largo Build in Charleston
I thought maybe the black residue was the graphite. I get a little due to normal wear as I am using the Graphite packing. The cotton probably did get a little warm. It takes a little practice and trial and error for us newbies to tweak it in. If I ever need to uncouple the shaft, I may switch to the water cooled drippless setup. For now the graphite is doing fine.

You should be able to find some nice smooth water on Friday. Can't wait to see your creation.

Glad your sea trials are going well. I'll be looking for you on Friday.

Re: Key Largo Build in Charleston
I took "Fly Boys" up to the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show (32nd Annual) this past weekend. Georgetown is a delightful, historic, seaside community. We had been to the show twice before. This was the first time I brought boats (my Guillemot Kayak too).
I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy a boat show, but seeing the look on the people's faces after I answered "2021" to their "What year boat is this?" made it really fun. I also talked to several people in the process of restoring or building a boat and they really appreciated my experience. Two of them were building Glen-L boats, one a Malahini. I encouraged him to get on the forum as he was thinking of a 60 hp and I remember Hercdrivers' Mal had a 90 with plans to go up to a 115?
My wife, Susan, really worked the crowd, taught the ...ahem...older... folks how to vote using a QR code and convinced most of them to vote for "Fly Boys." That activity locked up the people's choice award, but "Fly Boys" also won a judges award.
I didn't expect to care so much about the recognition, but it really felt great, especially with two son's and my daughter-in-law in attendance.
Those of you who have built boats...or are building a boat...likely understand these emotions...and will understand that standing next to the boat, out in the sun, talking to boat show patrons... for hours at a time...I saw dozens of little tweaks and flaws...that apparently, the judges did not see!

Re: Key Largo Build in Charleston
Awesome! You really did a fantastic job on that boat. The awards were earned honestly.
Re: Key Largo Build in Charleston
Congrats! So she is as good with technology as she is a boat hook, eh?
Re: Key Largo Build in Charleston
Your boat is deserving of credit, it is beautiful.

Roberta: Thanks. I'll have to check out the ACBS web site. Perhaps I can find a show in New England, where most of our family lives? (after the ice melts)
Matt (Hoodman): Thanks. She sure looks great in the twilight, sitting next to your beautiful Geronimo.
Chris: Hooker, Technology, Marine marketing...I humbly assert that Susan is a multi-talented first mate.
Matt (Hercdriver): Thank you, right back atcha!

Re: Key Largo Build in Charleston
I would have agree you did a beautiful job building it, I still toss around the idea of building the Key Largo, if we decide to build a straight inboard.
