I have a question. What is the white between the planking on the tops of some of the boats. I am getting ready to build a squirt. And I want to do the planking on the top of mine. It looks like grout. but don't think thats what it is. Any info would be helpfull.

The short answer is...

Some people use caulk

Some people use thin strips of another species of wood between the larger planks such as holly.

Some people use vinyl pin stripe sticker material.

Some people also pigment epoxy with a colorant and use cabosil is they use the white pigment to thicken the epoxy blend to a nice slurry mix and fill between the hardwood veneers and sand smoothe. Then coat the decks with varnish. This is an alternative to the way it used to be and works just grand.

Oyster Is the cabosil the same as microballons? And if not could you use microballons?

Cabosil is white. Microballons are for fairing and come normally in red. There are some fairing compounds called glass beads that are white. But these do not do the job because of the lack or resin when blended to get it even a slurry mix or thick enough simular to the glues thats made from blended epoxy

. To be sure you can just add enough to color it red. But when we want a dark color we use either a brown pigment and wood fibers which is a thickening agent for fillets. or we also use black pigment blended in the resins and then use the wood fibers for a black seam when clear coating over the wood decking. This is also the method that I use when joining wood like when I resaw and bookmatch or for hardwood mouldings that gets varnished. Always remember to mix your pigment and stir until you get it thoroughly blended and then mix your hardener in it.
