I decided to name it Gookooko'oo (owl, in Ojibwe) because of the paired knots on the bow deck. The petroglyph representation came from a petroglyph that was on the Columbia river bank before it was dammed (protects from evil water spirits, supposedly). That reminds me I have to put a name on my canoe too, it's going to be called Lacalacalac, or something like that, I have to check.
The word comes from Malagasy and is slightly rude, meaning hurry up, get a move on, something that no Malagasy likes to hear as they are firm believers that everything can wait until tomorrow, or preferably a week tomorrow.
When we went on a 4 day trip in dugout canoes in Madagascar last year our guide said it regularly to the Piroguier, who usually replied with a hand gesture that is difficult to represent with the symbols available on my keyboard.
